Fuji-san last erupted in December 1707, and the ash fell on Edo — modern Tokyo — some 100 kilometres away. The Hoei eruption lasted sixteen days and left a crater still visible on the southeastern flank. Since then the volcano has been silent, though it remains classified as active. The mountain's authority is older than any road to it. Shrines at its base date to the ninth century, raised to placate the deity Konohanasakuya-hime.
